There is no menu at Ostu di Djun. The family serve whatever Mama Francesca cooked that day, which is the only system that has ever worked here and the only one they intend to use. Wine arrives only in magnums — there are no half bottles, no individual glasses, no wine list. Candles, a piano in the corner, and a singular Piedmontese farmhouse atmosphere that exists nowhere else in quite the same form. The experience is complete in itself; attempting to describe or categorise it diminishes it.
This is one of the great rooms of the region, and Castagnito is worth the 45-minute drive from Bric del Vento for it. The evening will last as long as it lasts — there is no pace, no schedule, no second seating to clear the table for. Arrive hungry and with nowhere else to be. Reservation is essential and must be made in advance; Francesca cooks only what is needed and nothing extra.
